Historical Atlas of India

This book, titled Historical Atlas of India, is an indispensable tool for UPSC aspirants, as it bridges the gap between spatial geography and chronological history, transforming abstract events into tangible visual narratives. It has been specifically tailored for the History Optional paper in the Civil Services Examination (Main), as candidates are asked to identify historical sites on a map and provide concise descriptive notes. This revised edition also integrates previous years’ solved questions (2013–25) and practice exercises to align strictly with current examination trends.

Moreover, it serves as a vital resource for General Studies and Prelims. Apart from civil services, this book will also be of use to candidates of other examinations requiring map study in Indian history.

Some Salient Features

Comprehensive Chronology: This book covers India through different ages, from prehistoric to modern periods.

Visual Memory Aid: Quality maps have been provided to enhance pictorial memory, which is essential for recalling complex details, such as river systems, empire boundaries, and ‘locations in the news’. There are three sets of maps: (i) India through the ages, from prehistoric times to immediately after independence; (ii) Indian sites of historical importance; and (iii) sites pertaining to specific facets of Indian history and culture. Descriptive texts accompany the maps in the first two sets to help the aspirants study the third set of maps.

Alphabetically Arranged Sites: More than 500 sites are arranged alphabetically without any distinction between ‘ancient’ and ‘medieval’ on the maps, as, from the point of view of an examination, the candidate will just be asked to mark the location of a place of historical importance.

Site-Specific Descriptions: The sites are depicted in maps accompanying each group. Each site has been briefly explained with its historical/cultural importance, and most significant features. The reader will find the arrangement helpful, making it easy to locate sites.

Guidelines for Locating Sites on Maps: Useful guidelines are given on how to remember the location of different sites while marking them correctly on a blank map, or to identify the sites indicated by numbers on a map.

Exam Orientation: A number of practice exercises (including UPSC previous years’ solved questions from 2013 to 2025) have been included.

Current Updates: This revised edition includes ‘new discoveries’ and updates on already existing sites of historical importance.
